My Reason for Becoming an Art Educator

I want my classroom to be a place where students feel excited to create, confident in their ideas, and proud of the work they make.

I've known since I was young that I wanted a career in art. When people asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my answer was always, "I want to be an artist!" That passion never faded, but it evolved once I reached high school and met the first art teacher who truly inspired me.

For the first time, I experienced art classes that weren't built around the same cookie-cutter projects. Instead, we were encouraged to think differently, to make work that reflected who we were. That freedom to create something personal and unique made me excited to come to class and eager to keep working on my ideas.

During my senior year, that same teacher was finishing her undergraduate work and brainstorming new project ideas for her future classes. I helped her test and refine some of those ideas, offering ways to make them more engaging for students. She told me I would make a great art teacher, something I hadnt seriously considered before. At the time, I realized I had never seen an art teacher who also identified as an artist. That perspective shifted everything for me.

Now, my goal is to become the kind of art teacher I once needed, someone who inspires creativity, encourages experimentation, and helps students find their own artistic voices. I want my classroom to be a place where students feel excited to create, confident in their ideas, and proud of the work they make.
